4. On the Job Training
This story is a bit different. Luke’s story tells us of Jesus’ instructions to a group of followers he is sending out in the surrounding area. This is not a group of people offering hospitality, but rather those who should receive it. They were being sent out to places Jesus would be visiting in the near future. In verses 3-4 Jesus tells them they are going out without earthly protection or means. He wants them to be totally dependent on God for their needs as Jesus himself is. Something the disciples will have to get used to after the crucifixion.
Verse 7 may be on the surface puzzling. What Jesus is saying here it don’t go looking for the best accommodations in a town. If someone offers you hospitality, graciously accept it.
There is much more to say about this passage, but in the context of hospitality I think this pretty much covers it.
Lord Jesus, help us to be reliant on you. May we be more comfortable with people showing us grace and hospitality just as we want people to be comfortable with the grace and hospitality we show them. In your Holy name we pray. AMEN
